WebSummit is an immersive technology conference hosted in Lisbon, Portugal and attended by thousands every year. Here’s our team’s highlights, and the best tweets, for the 2019 event.

Our team at WebSummit 2019

This annual tech event gathers everyone from tech giants to innovative startups and everyone in between to be inspired, educated and informed about the rapidly moving technological world. “At a time of great uncertainty for many industries and indeed, the world itself, we gather the founders and CEOs of technology companies, fast-growing startups, policymakers and heads of state to ask a simple question: where to next?” says Websummit on their website.

Our head of social media, Nicole Glover, was one of Penquin’s ambassadors to the event and said that several key messages really stood out for her in this massive conference (with over 70 000 attendees!). We’ll go into this in more detail in upcoming blog posts (subscribe to get them straight to your inbox) but in summary:

  • Brand purpose: What you stand for as a brand is becoming pivotal for success.
  • Connection with the audience: Be more personal to connect on a real level with your audience. This particularly applies to social media.
  • AI and future tech: not all of this applies to SA yet, but there is a lot of exciting growth and development happening worldwide.
  • Gen Z: Stop your Millennial obsession (most of them are deep in their thirties now) and focus on the up-and-coming workforce. User experiences are crucial for this generation.
  • Robots: “I saw a lot of robots... a lot more than I anticipated!” says Nicole. From Spot the robot dog (who dances) to Sophia (who Nicole has followed on social media for a long time) the conference was packed with the reality of robots entering the real world sometime soon.
  • Nicole’s favourite quote: Innovation is about failing a couple of times. If you’re not innovating, you’re not failing.”

Here are some of the best tweets from the four day event
